First, we need to know that anemia is not a disease, but a symptom, which can be addressed through both medically and alternate methods. It is a condition where they do not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry enough oxygen throughout the body. Someone having anemia would be fatigued, feel colder and maybe breathless most of the time.
Most of the time, the condition is alleviated through proper diet and iron supplements, but if it persists the doctor should ascertain the root cause of it and address the cause medically.
Massage as an alternative therapy could be an option, where the soothing and slower motion helps to oxygenate the blood. Caution and care should be taken to initiate a session with the consent of a medical practitioner in consultation with the therapist. Hard, stimulating or vigorous strokes should be avoided. Additionally, to rule out any serious conditions that would contraindicate massage, the primary source of the anemia needs to be determined.
Lack of red blood cell in human body, usually leads to stomach and intestinal deterioration. To foster a healthy gastrointestinal system various types of massage techniques like abdominal massage or Shiatsu can be tried to enhance circulation in the stomach to prevent further deterioration of the stomach lining. Apart from this, the prescribed massage session also helps in other reflexology points in the stomach helping in proper food digestion and assimilation of nutrients.
At no point, it should be understood that only massage therapy has the ability to eradicate the anemic condition of an individual. Injections of vitamin B12 as a supplement also can be considered to address the B12 deficiency in the body. Care should be taken to avoid the injection site for at least one hour before massage therapy session starts.
In fact, it is observed in some cases that the massage therapists are the first clinical professionals who recognize their client’s need for an anemia evaluation. More often, the evaluation shows a B12 deficiency which is then referred to further examination to ascertain the actual cause.
An anemic condition can be alleviated by few specific massage types such as stone therapy, therapeutic touch, anma, Acupressure and Shiatsu, which would help the anemic patient to feel relief from chronic pain, mild inflammation, poor mobility, relaxation and stress. Proper blood circulation, oxygen in the blood and overall relief from massage sessions are what an anemic person should expect and look forward to apart from medical care and drugs.
